Academic Advising AT Georgia College
The Academic Advising Center at Georgia College & State University empowers every student to navigate their academic journey with clarity, confidence, and purpose through collaborative relationships that foster learning, self-awareness, and informed decision-making. Grounded in the liberal arts tradition, we help students connect their educational experiences to meaningful personal, academic, and career goals while supporting timely progress toward graduation. We are committed to building a culture of lifelong learning, preparing students to be informed and engaged members of their communities.
Academic Advising Services
The best way to meet with an academic advisor is to schedule an appointment online, using the “Academic Advising” link in MyGCSU or following the link directly to the Student Advising Portal. New and prospective students can visit this link to schedule. For help scheduling an appointment, email advising@gcsu.edu or call 478-445-2361.
For urgent concerns during Add/Drop Week and Registration Week, advisors are available on an on-call basis to assist students without an appointment. Please note that during these times, advisors will not meet walk-in students for schedule planning or to release a registration hold; an appointment will still be required for these services.
The Academic Advising Center is located on the second floor of Lanier Hall.
Meeting with your advisor
We recommend you complete the Pre-Registration Advising Worksheet to prepare for pre-registration appointments.
Email or call your advisor if you have specific problems or questions. You can expect a response to emails and phone calls within two business days.
When in doubt, don’t hesitate to contact your advisor with any questions related to your academic progress.
Appointment changes and cancellation
If you can’t make your appointment, you can easily reschedule or cancel. Just open the confirmation email you received when you booked the appointment and click Cancel Online. On the page that opens, click Cancel Registration. Don’t forget to confirm your choices. Another option is to email or call your advisor with your cancellation request.
You can then reschedule using the Student Advising Portal on MyGCSU if needed. If possible, we request that you cancel appointments at least 6 hours in advance, so that other students may use your time slot.
Policy Requiring Mandatory Advising Meeting for Students
Your academic advisor is here to help you understand your degree requirements, track your progress, and plan for what comes next. Before you begin your first semester at Georgia College, you’ll be assigned an academic advisor through the Academic Advising Center.
Meeting with your academic advisor is an important part of your college experience. All students are expected to meet with their advisors before registering for classes each semester to review their academic progress and plans. To help ensure you complete this important step, an advising hold will be placed on your student account each semester. The hold will prevent you from registering for the following semester until you have met with your advisor. Once you complete your advising meeting and discuss your plans, your advisor will lift the hold so you can register.
Advising is more than a registration requirement. It’s an opportunity to ask questions, talk through your options, make sure you’re on track with your degree requirements, and plan ahead for your next semester. We're here to help you make informed decisions and get the most out of your Georgia College experience.
